VTMAS No. 84: When Ducks Fly?

Writer: Valerie WillisValerie Willis

I love being able to travel! Since my author and publisher career started to spread its wings, I've been able to go and see places I had only been able to view from my computer, television, or even the books on my shelf. Granted, it's been mostly continental US with places like Chicago and Washington DC. But sometimes its the conventions and events closer to home that still shock me with how little I know about certain events.

For example, I didn't realize that Jeepers and rubber duckies are two things that belong together. It's moments like these that I am thankful for having a friend along for the ride, since I still feel even this better known Jeep Fanatic Tradition might sound a little wild for those not in the know (like we were).

There we were, author JM Paquette and myself in the area for the wonderful Interracial Romance Author Expo when we realize there's something much bigger happening in Daytona, FL. Jeeps. All sizes, models, colors, and ... rubber duckies? They fill dashboards, backseats, hoods, bars, and even the owners are sporting the little array of bath time fun. We're at a light, cracking up how this would be a perfect thing to have happen for a Rom Com during like a honeymoon gone awry.

A duck flies pass the windshield, bright yellow and we blink. Suddenly more follow, going one way then the next. We realize there are two rows of jeeps at a redlight ahead of us and they start a rubber ducky tossing war. It had and will always be a highlight of my day and continue to make me giggle.
